Yes, in most situations, the person you’re talking to can see the phone number tied to your WhatsApp account.
In this guide, we’ll explain exactly when your phone number is visible, when it isn’t, and what you can do to improve your privacy.
Why Does WhatsApp Require Your Phone Number
Unlike many social media platforms that let you sign up with an email address or username, WhatsApp uses your phone number as your account ID.
That number is used for registration, login verification, contact discovery, message delivery, account recovery, and security checks. Because the app is built this way, there is no simple button to hide your number on personal accounts.
What you can control via Settings > Privacy is peripheral:
- Profile photo > My Contacts / Nobody
- About > My Contacts / Nobody
- Last seen & online > Nobody / My Contacts / My Contacts Except
- Status > similar granularity
- Read receipts > off
These settings only hide your profile information, not your phone number. If you exchange messages with someone or are in the same group, they can see your number by tapping your profile, even if you aren’t in their contact list.
WhatsApp’s own help center puts it plainly: “There is no way to hide your phone number when using WhatsApp. Your phone number will still be visible even if the recipient has not saved your number in their contact list.”
Who Exactly Can See Your Number
- One-on-One Chats: If you initiate a chat with someone, or they initiate with you, your WhatsApp-registered number is visible.
- Group Chats: Everyone in the group — including strangers — can tap your name and see your number.
- Community Groups: WhatsApp introduced a “Phone number privacy” toggle inside some community groups, though admins can still see it.
- Blocked Contacts: Blocking doesn’t retroactively erase it from their phone.
- Business Chats: As noted above, when you open a chat with a business for the first time via an ad, mask WhatsApp number by default. You’ll see a system message saying so. You can manually share it via Business name > Phone number privacy > SHARE NUMBER, but once shared, you can’t undo it.

Method 1: Register With a Virtual / Secondary Number
Since you can’t hide the number after registering, the smart play is: don’t register with your real number in the first place.
Google Voice
Google Voice gives you a real US number that receives SMS and calls. Free, but US only. Steps:
- Install Google Voice and sign in with a Google account.
- Pick an available number.
- Verify with your real number once.
- Install WhatsApp, register with the Google Voice number, and grab the SMS code from the Voice app.
Result: Everyone on WhatsApp sees your Voice number, not your carrier number.
Downside: WhatsApp has tightened VoIP verification — some Voice numbers get rejected during signup, and Meta occasionally purges accounts it flags as “non-mobile”. It works, but not 100% guaranteed long-term.
Other virtual-number paths
- Burner / Hushed / MySudo — paid/disposable numbers, better success rate than free VoIP for WA verification.
- Second physical SIM — cheapest prepaid SIM, used only for WA. Most reliable.

Method 2: Switch Your Existing Account to a New Number

- Enter real number + virtual/secondary number.

Changing your phone number is better than starting a new account because you won’t lose your old chats. Just keep in mind that people in your groups will now see your new number instead of your old one, so your new contact info will be visible to them.
